Coronation Street Norris Cole's death confirmed as fans left heartbroken

ITV has confirmed one of Coronation Street's legendary characters is set to be killed off next week.

Spoilers have revealed Norris Cole is set to depart the show after 27 years on the cobbles of Weatherfield.

Actor Malcolm Hebden confirmed earlier this year he wouldn't return to the soap due to health reasons - and scenes next week will show Ken Barlow discover Norris has died after suffering a stroke.

The episodes will air as part of a double bill on Wednesday September 15.

in the first edition, Ken and Rita are left feeling intrigued as Norris contacts them arranging to meet up with some important news.

However, they’re shocked to hear from Freda that Norris has collapsed and been taken to hospital with a suspected stroke. When they arrive at the hospital in the later episode they are devastated to find out Norris died 30 minutes earlier.

Fans speculated which character could be getting killed off when pictures emerged of the cast filming funeral scenes last month.

Norris' funeral arrangements will spark a row in the show between Mary and Freda as they argue over where best to hold the wake. - before Rita steps in and asserts that Norris would have chosen the street.

The disagreement will escalate in Friday's episode as Mary announces she’s stepping down and Freda can sort out the funeral herself.

81-year-old Malcolm Hebden's last appearance in Coronation Street came in 2020 during an episode to celebrate VE Day.

His portrayal of Norris Cole has established the character as a firm fan favourite ever since he debuted on the show in 1994 - and ITV will air a special tribute show to commemorate the character on September 13.

News of the death has reached fans online who have taken to Twitter to say they have been left heartbroken:

One user said: "Oh not Norris"

Another added: "Very sad about this. Norris was a good character and Malcom Hebden is a great actor."

A third commented: "No that’s so sad that they’re actually ending his time on the show. I know he’s struggled with ill health himself but this is Norris we’re talking about. Norris Cole can’t die - he’s immortal. He will be nosey and cantankerous until the world implodes."

A fourth said: "RIP NORRIS COLE."
