Coronation Street Mike Baldwin actor Johnny Briggs dies aged 85 as tributes pour in

Coronation Street legend Johnny Briggs has died at the age of 85.

The soap actor, most famous for playing Mike Baldwin for 30 years, was surrounded by friends and family as he passed away this weekend after a long illness.

During his time on the Corrie cobbles, Johnny was at the centre of some of the ITV's soaps biggest storylines, including his affair with Deidre Barlow behind husband Ken's back, resulting in that iconic scene on the Barlow's doorstep, which pulled in over 20 million viewers.

Other memorable moments in Wetherfield for Mike included the death of his beloved ex-wife Alma from cancer and his son Mark's affair with his much younger wife Linda.

Mike bowed out after suffering a heart attack on the cobbles in 2006 as Johnny bid farewell to the role he'd played since 1976.

Paying tribute to Johnny on Twitter, one fan wrote: "Growing up you could watch your Tyson v Bruno, Benn v Eubank etc but nothing could reach the heights of battle when it came to Baldwin v Barlow. Absolute warriors of the cobbles!!! RIP legend!!"

A second posted: "RIP Johnny Briggs. Baldwin vs Barlow was the Ali vs Foreman of the cobbles"

As well as being a Corrie legend, Johnny starred in a number of Carry On films and other TV shows like , The Saint, The Persuaders, No Hiding Place and Thick As Thieves.
