Old Coronation Street episodes which feature Hayley Cropper now carry a warning over "opinions of the time" that "viewers may now find offensive".
Transgender Hayley, played by Julie Hesmondhalgh, appeared in the soap for 16 years, but now ITV bosses have alerted viewers of the repeat episodes on ITV3 that the language used at the time could potentially upset fans today.
The episodes featuring Hayley now offer a pre-show message, saying: "Today's classic Corrie includes transgender comments and opinions of the time that viewers may now find offensive."
The recent change was noticed by Annie Wallace, who was the first person to play a transgender character on a British soap.
She wrote on Twitter : "Thank you, @ITV for preceding some of the current #ClassicCorrie episodes featuring Roy and Hayley with this alert. #timeschange."
Hayley Cropper tragically died on the show in 2014 after a heartbreaking battle with pancreatic cancer.
She first made an appearance in 1998, making history with her on-screen husband Roy Cropper.
Her storylines touched on the struggles that transgender people face with getting married and adopting children.
It comes after Britbox issued a pre-show warning over an episode from 1968 which sees Stan and Hilda Ogden going out for dinner at a Chinese restaurant, with the food being described as "foreign".
The episode description reads: "Stan and Hilda’s Big Night Out. Stan takes Hilda to a Chinese restaurant, but she doesn’t quite get the meal she expected. With language from a bygone era which some viewers may find offensive."
In recent episodes of Corrie, actress Tracie Bennett bid farewell to the cobbles.
On Friday, viewers watched evil Sharon try to con Street legend Rita into handing over £10,000 under suspect circumstances following the guilty verdict of drug boss Harvey Gaskell.
After the scenes aired on ITV, Tracie, who first had a stint on Corrie back in 1982, shared some behind the scenes snaps with her Twitter followers alongside a heartfelt caption.
"I had just shot my very last scene @itvcorrie for a while &went to dressing room to change," she tweeted regarding her selfie against the street's famous cobbles.
"All just so I could say 'Ter Ra' at this very moment. Thanks to those who know what they did for me & to haters & lovers," the 60-year-old continued.
"We do our best for everyone. See you soon. ‘Av it."
