Coronation Street hit with almost 300 Ofcom complaints over therapy comment

Coronation Street has been hit by almost 300 comments following a controversial comment made by Evelyn Plummer.

The episode, which aired Monday August 16, saw Evelyn (Maureen Lipman) speaking about to her 10-year-old great-granddaughter Hope to Tyrone Dobbs.

Evelyn had snarked: "She’s had play therapy, touchy, feely rubbish, new age, but she needs something long-term. Teach her right from wrong."

In response, Play Therapy UK (PTUK) and Play Therapy International criticised the remarks, which they claimed "discounted the effectiveness of play therapy, bringing the profession into disrepute".

The organisations called for an apology from ITV and had called on their members to complain to Ofcom.

A total of 275 complaints were made to Ofcom following the episode.

Next week, Fiz and Tyrone have to take a reluctant Hope to her first therapy sessions, which were part of her sentence for setting fire to the flat.

Hope tells the psychologist that she started the fire because she was sad when her dad left her and that people are always leaving her. Both Fiz and Tyrone are left heartbroken over her comments.

Later, Tyrone's heart sinks when Alina announces that she has booked a trip to Romania so that he can meet her family.

However, Tyrone is aware that he can't leave Hope at such a crucial time.

It comes after viewers were left confused after 10-year-old Hope appeared to "get off lightly" over her fire charge.

Last week, Hope and her parents faced a judge at her sentence hearing where there was a surprise in store.

The judge decided that custody was no place for the youngster, and that she needed to be at home with her family.

She did reveal that Hope needed therapy and support from her loved ones, before saying she could go home.

One fan commented on Twitter after the scenes: "Hope gets told not to do it again it was only arson."

Another predicted: "Hope got away with it so she'll do it again."
