Coronation Street has announced its plans for its 10,000th episode

Coronation Street is screening an hour-long special to mark its 10,000th episode.

The soap, which was screened for the first time on December 9 1960, will celebrate this landmark with a special episode on Friday February 7 - and it's set to be packed with 'classic Corrie humour' with nods to the show's history.

The episode, which was filmed in December, has been penned by Damon Alexis-Rochefort.

Damon has written some of Corrie's funniest and most heartwarming storylines since 2004 including Deirdre Barlow's funeral and the aftermath of the 50th anniversary live tram crash.

Sharing a tweet by Corrie star Antony Cotton about the landmark he told fans: "Deeply honoured to have had the privilege of writing this, our 10,000th episode!

Damon also wrote the emotional farewell to Deirdre Barlow (ITV)

"It’s on Feb 7th so don’t miss it - lots of nods to the show’s unique history, and as much classic Corrie humour as I could cram in to an hour’s ep! #corrie #corrie10k #coronationstreet."

"Safe pair of hands (or set of typing fingers) for this important milestone. I’m sure it’ll be awesome," one fan told him.

"This is like music to my ears. Was already looking forward to it, but even more so now!" said another.

"Can Feb the 7th come any quicker?" asked another excited viewer.

Antony, who plays Sean Tully, tweeted in December about appearing in the episode.

The actor said: "My last scene of 2019, filming the first scene of our 10,000th episode! A very nice end to a brilliant year."

This is a big year for Corrie with its 60th anniversary also coming up in December.

The first episode, written by show creator Tony Warren, was broadcast live in black-and-white and featured 21-year-old student Ken Barlow, played by William Roache, 87, who is listed in the Guinness World Records as the longest-serving male television star in a continuous role.

It also introduced Weatherfield icons Annie Walker, Elsie Tanner and Ena Sharples.
