Coronation Street gets Ofcom complaints over distressing David Platt knife attack

Coronation Street has received Ofcom complaints over distressing knife scenes in Monday night's episode.

Some Corie viewers found the horrifying knife scenes uncomfortable and voiced their concern to the TV watchdog.

After having a row with mum Gail over his recent behaviour, David Platt stormed out the house and went on a boozy bender.

But Jack P Shepherd's character came unstuck when he tossed an empty beer can in the direction of a nasty gang.

The thugs shoved David up against a wall and ordered him to hand over his phone and wallet.

But confident David was unperturbed and refused to give in - even helping them to finish counting up to five.

Cocky David yelled: "Now what you gonna do? Do something then!"

However, things turned serious when one of the hooded gang members pulled out a knife.

According to The Sun, there were eight complaints made to Ofcom over the scenes.

Corrie fans were also left fearing that David will die after incurring the wrath of the gang.

Taking to Twitter, one viewer said: "That was too much for me im a mess seeing that"

"He always gets picked on by the writers of Coronation Street even though @JackPShepherd88 always rises to the occasion great actor love seeing him on screen BUT why so sad for him always," added another.

A third said: "@itvcorrie Getting pretty violent arent you?"

Corrie viewers will have to wait far longer than was originally intended to find out what happens to David.

With Corrie episodes being cut down to only three a week, the second half of Monday's episode will air on Wednesday instead.

And it was not lost on viewers, who admitted it felt strange not having the usual follow up episode at 8.30pm

One fan tweeted: "The pain of an episode ending when it was clearly meant to be back in half an hour originally"

"See you wednesday it feels strange already," added another.

A third said: "Poor David :( This isn't the answer! Feels weird not having an 8:30 episode xx"

Both Coronation Street and Emmerdale made the decision to stop production amid the coronavirus outbreak and halve their output.

A statement from a ITV explained: “ITV has sadly taken the decision to suspend production of the soaps Coronation Street and Emmerdale with effect from Monday 23 March.

"We’ve been doing our best to carry on filming, whilst adhering to the Government’s latest health guidelines, to ensure we’ve episodes of both soaps airing on ITV until at least the early summer.

"However, the health and well-being of the production teams, actors, crew and their families is of paramount importance to us and we now feel that the time has come to stop filming.

"We’d like to thank our viewers for their support and hope they continue to enjoy both soaps in the coming months."

*Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays on ITV at 7.30pm
