Coronation Street fans slam 'disrespectful' plot as Ted's funeral beset by dog blunder

Coronation Street viewers have accused the comedic plot surrounding Ted's funeral of being 'disrespectful'.

In Wednesday night's episode, the events leading up to the funeral of Gail Rodwell's father Ted came around.

As funeral director George Shuttleworth (Tony Maudsley) faced some issues, Gail's nemesis Eileen Grimshaw (Sue Cleaver) drafted in Steve McDonald ( Simon Gregson ) and Tim Metcalfe ( Joe Duttine ) into driving the hearse - with the two competing over who should drive.

With Tim too nervous and Steve driving too fast, Eileen eventually took to the wheel but then feared she had run over family dog David.

All of these hijinks, however, were divisive with Coronation Street views as some deemed it in poor taste during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Coronation Street's funeral storyline featuring Eileen Grimshaw has faced criticism (ITV)

Taking to social media, Corrie fans shared their views on the events of the two episodes

One viewer wrote on Twitter : "Sorry, but your portrayal of Funeral Directors is appalling. Especially at a time when they have worked tirelessly throughout the pandemic to deliver the best service possible".

Another penned: "Ridiculous story line didn’t find it funny considering so many people are passing."

Meanwhile, a different Corrie fan penned: "Very, very distasteful this funeral storyline. Sitting here with my father who is end of live. Nope. Not funny, more hurtful."

Elsewhere, another Twitter user wrote how much they enjoyed the comedy scenes: "I love when Gail and Eileen duke it out. Some of Corries best moments. Tim running away made me laugh so hard too. [laughing emoji, red heart emoji]."

Finally, one Coronation Street viewer stated they felt the writers should have been more mindful of Steve's own recent loss of son Oliver.

They tweeted: "How could Steve possibly think this was funny after everything he went through with Oliver just a few weeks ago. And Yes I Know it’s just a programme!!!"

Well, tonight's hour-long episode will see Eileen apologise to George for yesterday's events.

However, her relations with Gail soon turn nasty after she mocks Gail's genealogy project.

Could they come to physical blows once again?

*Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays on ITV.
