Coronation Street fans were horrified as Jan Lozinski was gunned down in broad daylight by human trafficker Rachel Healy.
After warnings of violent scenes, girlfriend Eileen Grimshaw screamed in horror, her hands covered in blood, as Jan lay lifeless on the ground.
Jan was shot by nail bar owner Rachel as she sought revenge over her arrest.
He met with Eileen at a truck stop, after pleading with her to move away with him, unaware that Rachel was following them.
The dramatic scenes unfolded as the modern slavery storyline came to a climax on the cobbles .
"Oh no not my Jan!" cried one fan.
"OH MY GOD NO," screamed another viewer on Twitter with weeping emojis.
"Sits mouth wide open," commented another.
Unlucky-in-love Eileen, played by Sue Cleaver, had been led to believe that her boyfriend was part of a human trafficking ring at Rachel's salon.
But she was unaware that Jan, played by Piotr Baumann, was a police informant working undercover to successfully expose the operation.
Earlier this summer the human trafficking plot was exposed by Eileen's lodger Seb Franklin, played by Harry Visinoni.
He learned his love interest Alina Pop, played by Ruxandra Porojnicu, was being forced to work in the nail bar and live in horrific conditions to support her family.
Police stormed the operation and arrested everyone involved and Eileen had washed her hands of Jan, thinking he was one of the traffickers.
She was stunned when he returned to Weatherfield and asked her to leave the street to start a new life together.
But the couple's happiness appeared to be short-lived as Rachel, played by Verity Henry, tracked them down with a gun.
Thankfully mysterious Jan lived to tell the tale and Eileen changed her mind and agreed to flee Weatherfield with him.
