Coronation Street fans in disbelief at England boss Gareth Southgate's 'cameo'

Coronation Street fans were in disbelief on Friday night after spotting Gareth Southgate on-screen.

Viewers had to double take as they were convinced that the England manager had made a surprise appearance on the cobbles.

Scheming Gary Windass introduced his business associate, Derek Milligan, to Nick Tilsley as a potential investor for the factory.

In a shock twist it turned out that Derek was actually in Gary's debt and was doing him a favour by pretending to be a rich businessman.

However, Corrie fans were more interested in the fact he looked remarkably like the Three Lions gaffer.

When Corrie posted on Instagram asking what Derek might be interested in, one joker replied: "The England squad because that is definitely Gareth southgate, wys"

Taking to Twitter , one viewer asked: "Is that Gareth Southgate?"

"Gareth Southgate was brilliant on #Corrie tonight," added another.

The beard looked almost identical to Gareth's but he was not wearing the manager's trademark waistcoat.

Unsurprisingly, it was not actually Southgate playing the part of Gary's accomplice.

Derek was actually played by Liverpudlian actor Craige Els, who has also appeared in Call The Midwife and The Bletchley Circle.

Derek is hoping to score for Gary (ITV)

Derek looks set to play a key part in Gary's dastardly new scheme to take over the factory.

He pretended to be a very rich businessman who would invest in the factory rebuild, but only if Gary was in charge of the building work.

After some deliberations the factory workers decided to give him the go ahead, much to Sarah Platt's annoyance.

Goodbye Gareth...sorry Derek (ITV)

But just moments later it was revealed that Derek was a fraud who was working for Gary to pay off his debts.

Weatherfield's new criminal mastermind is paying for the rebuild, then Derek gets paid rent, before giving it all back to Gary.

When Derek thanked Gary for giving him some more money, he chillingly replied: "You are very, very welcome."

What has Gary got up his sleeve next?

*Coronation Street continues on Monday on ITV at 7.30pm and 8.30pm
