Coronation Street fans fear for Audrey Roberts as her health deteriorates

Coronation Street's Audrey Roberts is one of the soap's longest-serving characters.

Sue Nicholls, who plays Audrey, first appeared on the cobbles in April 1979.

In recent episodes, Audrey has watched her family experience some turbulent times, with both her grandsons David and Nick struggling to help their children.

By the time Christmas day arrives, she will be living with her family as her health deteriorates.

With families having to spend time apart last year due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Platts and Barlows decide to come together this year.

But Gail declares she’s not lifting a finger, David slams round in a grump and Peter and Carla do a runner, leaving Sarah in despair over their ungrateful families.

Audrey cracks open the wine first thing in the morning, and as her eyesight continues to deteriorate, some soap fans are worried for her.

Writing in a Coronation Street fan group on Facebook, one said: "First Roy Cropper [leaving] then Audrey?"

Another replied: "If Audrey goes, I'll riot".

A third said: "If Audrey leaves [Coronation Street], it'll be the end of an era. It's looking more and more likely though."

Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays on ITV and ITV Hub
