Coronation Street fans baffled by Gemma and Chesney detail as soap boss explains all

Coronation Street fans saw the start of a brand new storyline for the Brown-Winter family earlier this week.

The week started with Joseph reminding his dad he needs money for a school trip and a new school jumper.

But Chesney was too busy dealing with the quads and his job.

Joseph ended up confiding in his cousin Hope Stape and she ended up handing him Fiz’s purse, telling him to help himself.

He was, however, soon caught out by his Auntie Fiz who forgave him once she knew why he was dipping into her purse.

The scenes did leave Corrie fans baffled for one reason - and that's down to the quads.

Gemma and Chesney welcomed their four children - Bryn, Cleo, Carys and Aled - towards the end of 2019 while on a tip to Llandudno.

But viewers haven't been seeing much of the children, who are now two-years-old.

During Monday night's episode, @helsrachel86 tweeted: "Bernies at work in the cafe, Gemma and ches are stood chatting to fiz outside the factory…. So where are the quads?????!!!!! #corrie."

"Talking of the invisible quads, they’re toddlers now so should be running around causing havoc!! Not crying like 1 newborn! #Corrie," @missemmajv said.

@AuthorKarenMaso added: "Those quads are so quiet anyone would think they didn't exist #corrie."

But speaking about what's to come for the residents of Weatherfield in 2022, Coronation Street's producer Iain MacLeod explained why the quads haven't been on-screen.

"I love that family a lot," he told the Manchester Evening News.

"I wish, for many reasons, that there hadn't been a pandemic-related containment of our filming but what that has meant, among other things, is that we haven’t been able to see much of the quads and the children as much as we would have liked.

"And the fact is, we probably still can't see as much of the children as we'd like. But, it felt like we were now able to examine that house a bit more."

He added: "Joseph is a sensitive young lad who already has a certain amount of tragedy in his background – he is essentially in the box room while his parent's attention is lavished on these four screaming children.

During Wednesday and Friday night's episodes, Corrie viewers will see Gemma and Chesney left shocked to learn that Joseph is being bullied at school because they can’t afford to buy him things.

Chesney quizzes Joseph about the bullies at school and offers to speak to his teacher but Joseph gets upset, adamant that it would only make matters worse.

But the worried dad-of-five goes behind Joseph's back, leaving the schoolboy furious with his dad for breaking his promise and reporting the bullies.

Chesney feels awful and heads out to the backyard to apologise to Joseph, only to discover him missing.

After a fruitless search, Chesney returns home and reveals Joseph’s run away as Gemma calls the police and the couple report him missing.

But Iain promises that the youngster will not become a ‘tearaway teen’ and be ‘the next David Platt’.

"It’s a really heartbreaking story about a kid having an incredibly hard time and his parents, however well-meaning,” struggling to contend with that," he adds.

Viewers will also see the wider family “makes some terrible decisions” and one by Gemma’s mum Bernie will see the whole family “be brought into disrepute” while jeopardising a potential relationship with Dev.

And Iain has teased that Joseph running away will spin-off into another story for a ‘neighboring household’ and the ‘re-introduction of a character’ connected to the No.5 household.
