Coronation Street could be first soap to address coronavirus after actor expresses 'concern'

A Coronation Street actor spoke out about coronavirus fears in an interview from the set.

The hit ITV soap is tackling coming out in sport and its storyline about a gay footballer struggling with his sexuality is set to come to a head.

Actor Nathan Graham appeared live from the cobbles this morning in an interview on Good Morning Britain - and addressed "concern" for the coronavirus outbreak on set.

Speaking with hosts Kate Garraway and Ben Shepherd, the actor, who plays footballer James Bailey in the hit soap, said he didn't expect the storyline to be as huge as it has proved to be.

His character is fearful coming out will hurt his career.

The actor appeared alongside rugby player Keegan Hirst, who is the first openly gay Rugby League player after coming out in 2015.

Keegan has been supporting the soap in its bid to tackle homophobia in sport.

Host Ben Shepherd then asked about the pair's fears given the global outbreak of coronavirus.

The soaps are yet to acknowledge the pandemic in episodes with viewers pointing this out on social media over the last few weeks.

The UK government is yet to place any restrictions on sporting events or large gatherings and Ben asked what steps had been taken in both Keegan and Nathan's places of work.

Nathan said: "I think there's concern everywhere ... we're just taking it day by day, really."

Keegan joked: "I don't know if Rugby League has enough fans to constitute a large gathering, Ben."

He said: "As far as games go, we're just waiting to hear what the RFL tell us and I imagine they're just going off advice given by the government."

Keegan then added: "Us as players are just carrying on as normal until we're told otherwise."

*Coronation Street airs on ITV tonight at 7.30pm
