Coronation Street casts Jane Hazlegrove as Gemma Winter's mum

Coronation Street has cast Jane Hazlegrove as new character Bernie Winter.

She will rejoin ITV the soap 34 years after appearing on the cobbles as a completely different character.

Hazlegrove, who is best known for playing Kathleen "Dixie" Dixon in Casualty, will play the estranged mother of street regulars Gemma Winter and brother Paul Foreman.

The 50-year-old actress has said that she is "thrilled" to be heading for Wetherfield and that she "can't wait to get stick in."

Hazlegrove added: "It's where I started my apprenticeship as a very young actor. I can't wait to get stuck in."

She previously played Sue Clayton, who was the daughter of Harry and Connie Clayton and lived at 11  Coronation Street  .

The Manchester-born actress is set to join the show in July and is described as an "old raver who still sees herself as a free spirit".

Bernie will make her debut as daughter Gemma, played by Dolly-Rose Campbell, gears up to welcome her first child after she found out she was pregnant with ex-boyfriend Chesney Brown.

And she isn't expected to be a quiet character and Corrie fans can expect feathers to be ruffled.

A Corrie spokesperson said: "Like mother, like daughter.

"We are very pleased that the fantastic Jane Hazlegrove has agreed to join the cast as the irrepressible and impossible Gemma's even more irrepressible and impossible mother. Fur will fly!"

In January 2016, Hazlegrove left Casualty after playing the role of Dixie for 10 years.

The new announcement will be refreshing news to fans of the soap after a string of stars have announced their exits.

Kate Connor actress Faye Brookes is the latest star to announce she is quitting the programme after four years.

She announced the news on Twitter on Tuesday, just four days after co-star Tristan Gemmill left fans gutted at the news he would also be leaving.
