Coronation Street bosses celebrate 40 years of Audrey Roberts for Sue Nicholls

Coronation Street is celebrating a special milestone as it's been 40 years since Audrey Roberts first trod the cobbles.

Audrey joined the soap on April 17, 1979 and has been played by actress Sue Nicholls since the beginning.

Corrie's Twitter page marked the special anniversary by sharing a snap of Sue, now 75, enjoying a special anniversary surprise.

The star was gifted with a huge bouquet of flowers, a bottle of bubbly and an incredible cake made to look like Audrey's hair salon.

Her cake even had a little marzipan Audrey sitting on top of the hairdressers.

Paying tribute to Sue, the page tweeted: "As part of the celebrations for 40 years on the cobbles for the wonderful Sue Nicholls, check out this fantastic (and very tasty) cake presented to her by producer Iain MacLeod in front of cast and crew."

The account also asked Corrie fans to share their favourite memories of the legendary character.

One person said they loved her exasperated sighs at her grandson David Platt , while another recalled the sad scene when her beloved Alfie died.

Many remembered when she threw a bunch of flowers at her rival Claudia Colby, which aired just last year.

Her very first scene saw her make a surprise appearance at her daughter Gail's birthday party.

Then called Audrey Potter, her presence was an unwelcome surprise for Gail, who had been celebrating with her boyfriend at the time.

Earlier this year, Sue Nicholls was among a group of Corrie's biggest stars who were said to be forced into taking a pay cut or risk being axed from the show.

Among the group at risk was Simon Gregson (Steve McDonald,) Helen Worth (Gail Platt,) and even William Roache (Ken Barlow).
