Coronation Street boss 'planning comeback for legendary character Bet Lynch'

Julie Goodyear could be dusting off her leopard print to reprise her role as Bet Lynch if Coronation Street's top boss has his way.

The 77-year-old actress first appeared on the cobbles all the way back in 1966 - and was a main star of the show from 1970 to 1995, while also returning for special episodes between 2002 and 2003.

But now after a 17 year absence, the star could be set to return to the long running ITV soap as show bosses hope to entice her back into her beloved role as Rovers Return barmaid Bet.

Series producer Iain MacLeod told the Daily Star Sunday that producers have talked about potentially luring the legendary actress back to the cobbles.

“Bet is an icon. The idea of bringing her back is talked about occasionally. As any Corrie viewer would say, she is up there in the pantheon of Corrie greats,” he said.

“So it’s always tempting to bring her back,” he added.

Iain has been instrumental in bringing back other past Corrie stars for another walk down the cobbles - including Charlie Lawson, 60, as Jim McDonald and Malcolm Hebden, 80, as Norris Cole.

With a 60th anniversary approaching for the show this year, fans should brace themselves for jaw dropping moments when the landmark is celebrated in December.

"We won’t be doing a live episode. It’s time to do something different. But it won’t be any less ambitious,” Iain teased.

“We are going to be telling the stories in a slightly different way. It’s important when you’re celebrating a milestone that you don’t purely look back at times past, but also find a way to renew and look to what the next 60 years might be like,” he added.
