Alan was a jobbing actor until he got his big break in the TV film Scum, where he played inmate Meakin.
He then went on to star as Angadi, part of a kidnapping gang, in the hard-hitting police drama The Professionals in 1980.
The same year Alan landed the role as Loggo in Boys from the Blackstuff, a BBC drama about unemployed men in Liverpool during the recession.
After a run off successful drama appearances, Alan took a temporary role in ITV soap Coronation Street, playing Jason Grimshaw's estranged father.
