Coronation Street address coronavirus as ITV soap gives 'hand washing' advice

Coronation Street became the first soap to address the growing concern around the spread of coronavirus by offering some timely advice.

Hours after PM Boris Johnson's speech to the nation where he told people to work from home wherever possible; avoid bars, restaurants and theatres and for people in the 'at risk' groups, including pregnant women, to go into isolation for a lengthy period; the ITV soap returned to screens for its usual Monday night double-bill.

And it featured a scene that, whether intentional or not, gave a firm nod to the advice the Prime Minister has been giving on coronavirus.

The Coronation Street abuse storyline involving Yasmeen and Geoff has shocked viewers over the past few months and in one of Monday's episodes he forced her to clean their bathroom, before telling her: "Hey, wash your hands first you’ve just had your arm jammed up a u-bend."

As Yasmeen got some soap and put her hands under the tap, Geoff asked: "You are singing happy birthday twice over in your head like I told you?"

In a more starling remark, Geoff then tried to convince Yasmeen to move to Cyprus by claiming the UK is "no place for old folk in the winter".

Viewers couldn't believe, of all the characters, it was evil Geoff dishing out the advice. One tweeted: "Love it that Corrie are taking hand washing seriously! Best thing Geoff’s said in a long time! " and another reacted: "Ooooh that must be a recently shot inserted scene there Geoff & Yasmeen on the hand washing!!!"
