Coronation Stone on Hill of Tara vandalised with spray paint graffiti

Bizarre graffiti has been spray painted onto the ancient Coronation Stone of Tara in Meath.

The word 'fake' was spray painted on the 5,000-year-old monument, which was used as the location to crown the High Kings of Ireland.

A motive for the act has not been uncovered but Meath gardai have launched an investigation into the incident. They are appealing for any member of the public information to come forward.

Meath Crime Prevention wrote on Facebook: "Navan Gardai are investigating an incident of criminal damage whereby the Lia Fail standing stone on the Hill of Tara was sprayed with graffiti. The incident occurred sometime between Monday evening and Tuesday morning last.

"The Lia Fáil is located at the centre of the historical site on the Inauguration mound on the Hill of Tara." Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses or anyone who may have information in relation to this incident to please contact Navan Garda Station on 046 9036100 or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111.

One Facebook user branded the vandalism as "disgraceful". It is the third time the stone was vandalised.

In 2012, the stone was damaged in 11 places with a hammer and then in 2014, green and red paint was poured on the stone.
