Cornwall's airport closes due to coronavirus pandemic

Cornwall's airport has been forced to shut and suspend its flights.

The closure at Cornwall Airport Newquay is "temporary", the airport said, but it is not clear when it will reopen.

Flights to Alicante, Faro, Dublin and the Isles of Scilly have been suspended until further notice, Cornwall Live reported.

Other routes are still scheduled to commence from May, including Dusseldorf (May 2), Stuttgart (May 23), Newcastle, Glasgow and Aberdeen (May 28), Jersey and Guernsey (June 1), Edinburgh (June 20), Copenhagen (June 26) and London Heathrow (July 2).

The Cork service will not operate in 2020.

An airport spokesperson said: “Our terminal is temporarily closed, with all scheduled flights to and from the Airport suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The Aerodrome remains open to support vital services such as the Cornwall Air Ambulance, HM Coastguard Search and Rescue, and Military operations.

“Where possible our staff will be redeployed to support the wider response within Cornwall, through the Corserv group of companies.”

Corserv is a separate company owned by Cornwall Council which also includes Cornwall Housing and roads contractor Cormac.
