Cornish pasty firm forecasts £7m turnover after record start

A Cornish pasty business has reported a record start to the year and predicted turnover to reach £7m in 2022.

Cornish Premier Pasties, which has more than 60 staff, produces more than 40,000 pasties, sausage rolls and slices every day and supplies wholesalers, retailers and outlets in Cornwall and throughout the UK.

The St Columb-based company was acquired by Redruth’s Prima Bakeries last year, with the group now one of the largest producers of Cornish pasties in the country, with a combined workforce of more than 150 staff and 600 customers across the UK.

In a trading update Cornish Premier Pasties said sales were up 54% at the end of the first quarter. The family-run business added a rise in demand could see allow for year-on-year growth of 19% by the end of 2022.

The company committed to investing over £100,000 in the next 12 months on bakery production equipment and vehicles, to support the forecast growth. It said it would also look to increase manufacturing service lines and continue to recruit from the local community.

Having recently introduced vegan products to its range, the business said it was set to introduce new product developments.

Mark Norton, managing director of Cornish Premier Pasties said: “Whilst our plans to grow are incredibly exciting, our priority is that this does not come at a cost of quality or customer service – something we are well known for.

“As well as ensuring this high-quality product and service, we will continue to respond to the consumer market with relevant and exciting new products in line with the demand for vegan and alternative options, as well as looking at all aspects of reducing food miles and energy usage.”

Cornish Premier Pasties scooped gold and silver in the Cornish Pasty Company category at the World Pasty Championships last month.
