Cornerstone launches 40th anniversary fundraiser

A social care charity which has recently showcased its new premises in Airdrie is asking people to take part in a fundraiser to mark its 40th anniversary.

Cornerstone is challenging supporters to cover a distance of 40 miles during this month – by running, walking, cycling “or even spacehopper” – to raise £100 for its work helping people with disabilities and long-term health conditions.

The organisation has a base at Hallcraig Street which offers accessible training spaces, offices, conference space, meeting rooms and a kitchen.

Founded in February 1980, Cornerstone supports more than 3000 people with care and other services, including more than 200 across North Lanarkshire.

The charity says its services have “been significantly impacted by the pandemic” and is asking people to take part in the 40 miles event to mark the final month of its anniversary year after being unable to mark it as planned.

Louise Baxter, a founding trustee and the wife of Cornerstone’s late founder, Nick Baxter, said the fundraising challenge “helps to ensure Cornerstone will be there for the next 40 years”.

She added: “Every single pound raised will be expressed in Cornerstone’s work to promote human dignity, lust for life, enjoyment and a better quality of life for people with disabilities and their families.”

Cornerstone relocated to the new facility at Hallcraig Street from nearby Wellwynd last year, and branch leader Robyn Birrell said: “It’s a huge step forward and will open up new options and activities for the people we support and their families, making a real difference to their lives.

“The central location increases our visibility and gives us many more opportunities to share what we do with the community – we’re now on a busy main road and our increased local presence has already got many people talking, asking who we are and what we do.”

Interested participants are asked to email getinvolved@cornerstone.org.uk to take part in the charity’s national 40th anniversary fundraising challenge.
