Coronavirus Ireland: Labour TD demands student nurses working in COVID-19 outbreak get paid

Labour TD Alan Kelly has demanded the HSE pay student nurses working on the frontline during the coronavirus pandemic.

The candidate for Labour leadership said it is wrong to have these students working for the state without being paid.

Speaking on RTE's Primetime yesterday, Alan said something had to be done to help these staff and that it was wrong they are not being paid.

He said: "We really do have to do something for student nurses.

"It is absolutely wrong that student nurses are being taken on by the state, being put into the frontline and are not being paid a penny."

A fundraiser was set up six days ago to provide support to student nurses.

To date, 247 coronavirus cases in Ireland are healthcare workers.

There are currently 1329 cases in the Republic of Ireland.
