Cormac O Braonain funeral sees crowds of mourners turn out in Dublin

Crowds of mourners flocked to the funeral of teen Cormac O Braonain today.

The Dubliner tragically died after being hit by a Luas in the early hours of Sunday morning, December 15.

The 19-year-old Labour Youth chairperson was pronounced dead at the scene after the bike he was cycling collided with a tram near Charlemont Bridge in Dublin.

Today's funeral took place in the Round Room of the Mansion House in Dublin.

Pupils from Colaiste Eoin, Cormac's old secondary school, lined Dawson Street to form a guard of honour for the young man.

His parents Eva and Lú held each other as a wicker coffin adorned with a red rose - the symbol of the Labour Party - was taken inside.

The hundreds of attendees included President Michael D Higgins and his wife Sabina, Labour Party leader Brendan Howlin and comedian Jon Kenny.

Former SIPTU president Jack O'Connor and Labour senators Aodhan O Riordain and Ged Nash also made their way to Dublin city centre for the funeral.

Cormac is survived by his parents, sister Muireann, gran Dimphne as well as the Walsh and O Braonain families, relatives and friends.
