Cork woman 'tragically' dies after accident while on trip to Tanzania

A young woman from Ballinascarthy, West Cork died following an accident in Tanzania on Sunday.

Sonia De Silva McCarthy lived in London but was originally from Cork and had been on a trip to the African country when she died.

Her funeral mass will take place in London however a book of condolences will be opened at Community Hall Ballinascarthy on Saturday 25th January between 1pm and 6pm.

A memorial mass is also expected to take place in Cork for the young woman.

Ballinascarthy GAA confirmed her death in a Facebook post on Tuesday.

"Sincere condolences to the McCarthy family Mounteen on the death of Sonia De Silva McCarthy, daughter of John and Lucia who was killed tragically in Tanzania on Sunday.

"A book of condolence will be opened in Sonia's memory on Saturday next (25th Jan) in the Community Hall Ballinascarthy. People can sign the book between 1.00 pm and 6.00 pm."

This is the second tragedy to befall Ballinascarthy in the last week after student Cameron Blair was killed at a house party on Bandon Road last Thursday.

Cameron received a slash wound to his neck and was pronounced dead later that night at Cork University Hospital.

Gardai investigating the fatal assault have arrested a male youth in his teens in connection with the incident.

He is currently being detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 at Togher Garda Station and is believed to have presented himself to the guards with his solicitor at lunchtime on Thursday.
