Cork student tragically dies in car crash while visiting family in India

A Cork student has tragically died in a car crash while visiting his family in India.

Muthamil Selvan Palanivel, who was doing a Masters in Artificial Intelligence, was killed along with wife Nisha, his children Siddarth, seven, and Vaishnavi, one, and his mother in law Mallika in the accident.

The incident occurred last Monday and was announced on Tuesday afternoon by the CIT Students Union on their Facebook page, CorkBeo reports.

This is the second tragedy to befall the college in a week after the murder of 20-year-old student Cameron Blair last week.

A statement from CIT SU President, Aaron Buckley, said: "A plenary session took place this morning to highlight the many supports we have available to all of Muthamil's friends and classmates in CIT.

"A memorial service is also being organised for next Monday where the Indian Ambassador will be in attendance at a service aiming to honour Muthamil's life.

"This has been an unprecedented period of tragedy for everyone involved in the CIT community and I am urging everyone to look out for each other in what will be tough times ahead for the family and friends of Muthamil Selvan Palanivel and Cameron Blair.

"There is a number of supports, such as counseling available to anyone who is affected by these unthinkable tragedies. Any student who is affected by these awful atrocities can email me at any time of the day or night on supresident@cit.ie."
