This image shows the frank reality of Ireland's current housing crisis.

Scores of people turned up for an apartment viewing on the Lee Road in Cork on Wednesday morning, further highlighting the state of the rental market around the country.

University College Cork student, Tom Redmond posted the image of a large crowd waiting to view the two bedroom apartment on Twitter.

The image has since received hundreds of online interactions.

Tom revealed that when he arrived at the viewing at 12:30pm, there was already a huge queue gathering outside.

Once he viewed the apartment he said it was not as it had been described, that the rooms were damp and that one of the two bedrooms advertised didn't have a bed.

Speaking to Cork Beo, Tom said: "I have been looking for a place since April and I have only had around six viewings so far. A lot of people I ring about places either don’t answer or never get back to you.".

It isn't just students who are finding it difficult to get accommodation for the academic year, Tom said that he is often competing with families and working professionals to get places.

He added: "Students are at the bottom of the pile as most people are looking for someone who will take a full year’s lease, which would then mean that students have to pay for the summer months as well".

He has also looked at apartments to share with working professionals however they are usually unwilling to take students as housemates.

Tom concluded: "I don’t know what I am going to do if I don't find a place, I will probably have to shift around between friend’s houses”.
