Cork fishing boat crew rescued after running aground at Ardglass, Co Down

The crew of a Cork fishing boat have been rescued after it ran aground on rocks off Co Down.

The Dillon Owen herring boat got into difficulties in the early hours of Wednesday morning while making its way into Ardglass Harbour.

It lost power and the crew of five had to be rescued after it drifted onto rocks.

The coastguard and local lifeboat were called to the scene and attempts were made to refloat the vessel.

However, when this failed, Kevin Quigley, from the NI Fishery Harbour Authority, told the BBC a decision was made to remove the crew for their safety.

He said: "The five crew members were all lifted off at around eight o'clock this morning.

"They are all safe and well and are away getting refreshments at the minute."

The Dillon Owen is now still in a dangerous position and has incurred significant damage.

Mr Quigley said: "She is holed and she will continue to get damaged in these rough enough conditions.

"It is a catastrophe for the family. Obviously things can be replaced and hopefully insurance will help out with that but it is about people and thankfully nobody was hurt or injured and that is the main thing here."
