Cork cosmetic nurse warns of enormous surge in young people getting botox treatments

The number of young people getting Botox has “exploded” by 300% in the past four years, it has been claimed.

Owner of Cosmeticare, Co Cork, Anne Hegarty said those in their early 20s are having the procedure done in record numbers.

The aesthetic nurse told the Irish Sunday Mirror: “We have seen a huge increase in young people wanting the treatment. Fillers and Botox have exploded.

“It’s because of Instagram, social media and celebrities getting it done. Young people like to brag about it and think it’s cool.

“There has been a 300% increase in people getting Botox treatment in the last four years alone.”

Botox – or botulinum toxin type A – is a deadly poison used to smooth wrinkles and has to be administered by a medical doctor.

However, dermal filler products can be injected into the face by unofficial practitioners.

Ms Hegarty said: “My consultant Dr Ray Barry injects Botox for medical reasons. It’s a prescription drug.

“You are not allowed to advertise it – it has to be called anti-wrinkle.

“We don’t encourage the younger generation to have it.”

Celebs including Harry Potter star Emma Watson and actor Halle Berry have spoken of using Botox treatments.
