Cork City swoop for Swedish top flight midfielder

Cork City have swooped for Swedish midfielder Albin Winbo ahead of the new Premier Division season.

The 25-year-old joins from top flight side Varbergs BoIS and spent some of last season on loan at Norwegian club Sandefjord.

Rebels boss Colin Healy feels Winbo’s experience of playing in the Swedish and Norwegian top flights will be an asset on their own return to the top tier.

Healy said: “We’re very pleased to get Albin on board. He comes in having played regularly in the top division in Sweden, as well as the Norwegian top flight.

“He’ll add quality and experience to the side. He’s a skilful player, but also well able to deal with the physical side of the game.

“We think he’ll be a good fit and we’re looking forward to seeing him in action.”

Cork City are continuing to run the rule over Dutch legend Clarence Seedorf’s nephew Quentin.

And they are still in the market for two more players to complement Winbo’s arrival at Turner’s Cross.

Winbo said: “I’m really pleased to be joining Cork City. I’ve been looking for a new challenge in my career and I’m really looking forward to playing in Ireland.

“I’ve heard a lot about the club and when I spoke to the manager, I liked what he had to say.

“I know this is an exciting time for the club, and I know the club is ambitious to succeed, so I’m looking forward to being a part of this.”

Elsewhere, former Cork City defender Colm Horgan has rejoined his hometown club Galway United.

Horgan, 28, left the Tribesmen for the Rebels in 2018 and then had spells with Derry City and Sligo Rovers.

The full-back said: “I’m delighted to be back. I didn’t come back to mess around - I came back with the intention of pushing for a league and to get promotion.”

Cian Browne, the former Waterford defender, has joined First Division rivals Cobh Ramblers.
