Cork braced for backlash from wounded Waterford - Patrick Horgan

Patrick Horgan is bracing himself for a Waterford backlash before they bow out of the Championship on Saturday.

Barring a highly unlikely set of results over the next two weekends, Waterford’s hopes of progressing to the knockout stages of the Championship were effectively extinguished with their 20-point defeat to Limerick last Sunday.

They travel to Pairc Ui Chaoimh on Saturday evening for their last round robin game and, after pushing Cork all the way in similar circumstances last year, Horgan expects more of the same this time.

He said: “Definitely expecting it because look at the players they have. They have match-winners all over the field so we’ve to be seriously on our game and hope that we can get through.

“That was their best performance of Munster last year I would say so we’re expecting more or less the same thing.”

Cork still have two round robin games remaining with a trip to Ennis on Sunday week their final outing though Horgan insists that every game is must-win after losing their opener to Tipperary.

“Every game, yeah. It is actually every game, especially with Tipp now through. Waterford aren’t but like the other three are the exact same so every game now is knockout.”

Cork may be required to beef up their scoring difference against Waterford to enhance their chances of reaching the knockout stages though Horgan insisted: “We’ll take any form of win. From playing them over the years we know how dangerous they can be.

“They’ve beaten us in an All-Ireland semi-final and a League final before that even so we know we’ve to be on our game.”
