Cork boxer Callum Walsh impresses in stoppage of wily veteran in California

Rising boxing star Callum Walsh saw his stock rise further as he took just four rounds to stop wily veteran Carson Jones in California on Friday night.

Cobh native Walsh, 22, won his seventh successive professional fight and his sixth inside the distance with a flurry of shots that saw the referee wave off a one-sided contest.

Walsh suffered a cut to his eye from an accidental headbutt in the third round of the bout at the Commerce Casino.

But he came out firing in the fourth round and a body shot dropped Jones (43-16-3, 31KO).

Walsh then hit Jones with a dozen unanswered punches before the referee stepped in.

On paper, the fight looked a big step up for Walsh, as Jones, 36, has pushed the likes of Kell Brook all the way in previous fights and came into this one on a three-fight winning streak.

But Walsh showed why he is highly rated by his legendary coach Freddie Roach, who graded it an A+ performance.

In the process, Walsh, who trains with Roach at his Wild Card gym in Hollywood, won the WBC USA Silver Super Welterweight title.

Walsh said after the fight: “Every single punch I throw is to get them out of there,” he added. “I’m not coming in here touching and moving. I’m throwing punches with bad intentions, every single punch.

“I hurt him with a couple of body shots, I could see him wincing from a couple of body shots, and I knew it was time for him to go, y’know? I knew I had him and, if I left him, he might have came into the fight later. I’ve seen him do that: he recovers and he comes back.

“So, I just got him out of there nice and easy. I’ve things to do. I’ve a flight to catch tomorrow.”
