Having landed the Group 2 July Stakes in Newmarket earlier, Wayne Lordan completed a big race double when partnering Peach Tree to a gutsy win in the Stanerra Stakes in Leopardstown last night.
The 7/1 shot was Aidan O’Brien’s third winner of the day, after her full-sister Love won the opening
two-year-old fillies maiden at the Foxrock track.
“She’s a grand filly and has been competing at a high level,” said Lordan. “Back in this company, over that trip, she travelled well and got to the line well.”
Love had made all under Donnacha in the opener, putting her experience to good use in beating promising newcomer Soul Search by a head.
Sheila Lavery took a chance running Magnetic North on ground she considered quicker than ideal. But it paid off as Rory Cleary partnered the tough five-year-old to a narrow victory over Innamorare in a slowly-run €100,000 Nasrullah Handicap.
Lavery explained: “Rory gave the horse a beautiful ride out there.
“I’m surprised he got away with the ground, but I had to run him. He’s more effective on soft and will head to Galway now.”
O’Brien, who bagged yesterday’s Tattersalls July Stakes (Group 2) with Royal Lytham (Wayne Lordan) has two runners on the second day of the Newmarket July meeting, saddling I Can Fly for the Group 1 Tattersalls Falmouth Stakes and Kipling in the seven-furlong two-year-old maiden.
The other Irish interest today will surround Ken Condon’s Celtic Beauty (Billy Lee) which will renew rivalry with her Albany conqueror Daahyah in the Group 2 Duchess Of Cambridge Stakes.
Tomorrow, Ballydoyle will be represented by Ten Sovereigns, Fairyland and So Perfect in the Group 1 Darley July Cup while O’Brien will also run two-year-old Ennistymon (Fillies maiden) and Year Of The Tiger (Superlative Stakes).
Tonight’s action is at Cork where Peregrine Run, a prolific winner over fences, might revert successfully to hurdling in the featured Gina & The Champions After Racing Hurdle.
A nine-time winner over the bigger obstacles, Peter Fahey’s nine-year-old completed a four-timer when
outpointing Mill Quest at Wexford last time and, receiving 10lb. from chief dangers Rashaan and Doctor Duffy, he might get the job done.
Doctor Duffy looks progressive while Rashaan, a Grade 2 winner at Fairyhouse at Easter, has to bounce back from a poor run at Down Royal last time.
