Cork actor Chris Walley wins prestigious Olivier Award

Actor Chris Walley has won Best Supporting Actor in the Olivier Theatre Awards.

The Cork born actor is best known for his role as "Jock Murphy" in the hit RTE sitcom "The Young Offenders".

The prestigious award was given to the 24-year-old actor at the awards ceremony in The Royal Albert Hall in London on Sunday night.

The role of “Davey” in The Lieutenant of Inishmore by Martin McDonagh,  which won Walley the award, was his first since he finished his studies in RADA in London.

The Young Offenders star Chris Walley will let it be known he is 'not British, but Irish' after getting BAFTA honour

Walley described his experience playing “Davey” as “such a treat,” adding that appearing in a McDonagh play was a dream come true, and that he couldn’t have asked for a better first job following his graduation from drama school, RTE reports.

The delighted young actor said he had grown up a fan of McDonagh’s dark, comic writing, and to be directed by Michael Grandage was “a bit overwhelming and mad.”

The play, staged in Noel Coward theatre in London, also starred Poldark actor, Aidan Turner - another well known Irish actor enjoying success across the water.
