Corey Coleman tears ACL during first practice, another costly WR injury for Giants

When it rains, it pours.

The Giants announced Friday morning that wide receiver Corey Coleman tore his ACL during the first practice of training camp on Thursday. This is on top of Sterling Shepard breaking his left thumb in Thursday's practice and rookie Darius Slayton being sidelined by a hamstring.

So the team that traded Odell Beckham Jr. in March now is decimated at receiver. The depth chart at the moment, excluding those three, includes Golden Tate, Cody Latimer, Bennie Fowler, Russell Shepard, Alonzo Russell, Brittan Golden and the recently-signed Da'Mari Scott.

The Daily News reported early Friday morning that the Giants already were bringing Northwestern rookie wide receiver Flynn Nagel in for a workout, according to a source.

Nagel (5-11, 188 pounds) impressed the Giants at their rookie minicamp in early May on a tryout, getting open consistently and showing quickness and good hands.

But the Giants suddenly are in crisis mode on the outside. They're hopeful Shepard will be ready by the Week 1 regular season opener in Dallas. Still, it's tough to be optimistic with this difficult early news.

This is particularly devastating news for Coleman, 25. The former first-round Browns draft pick was on the verge of a career resurrection entering year two as a Giant. He signed midway through last season, excelled as a kick returner and flashed on the outside.

Now he has to hope he can recover in time to be himself in 2020.
