Cory Allen, the Wales centre who scored three tries against Uruguay in their opening World Cup match, has been ruled out of the tournament with a hamstring strain.

The Cardiff Blues midfielder was in the squad following last season’s injury to the 2013 Lion Jonathan Davies. He has been replaced by Tyler Morgan, who was in the wider World Cup squad and went on the summer training camps to Switzerland and Qatar, starting in the first warm-up match against Ireland last month.

Morgan is the fourth replacement called up by Wales following Mike Phillips, Eli Walker and Ross Moriarty, the latter coming in for Walker, who strained a hamstring in one of his first training sessions after taking over from Leigh Halfpenny.

Wales have other fitness concerns before Saturday’s match against England at Twickenham. Three props, Paul James, Samson Lee and Aaron Jarvis, picked up knocks against Uruguay, along with the full-back Liam Williams, who suffered a dead leg.

They were being assessed on Monday afternoon with Warren Gatland aware that tournament regulations require him to have four fit props in a matchday 23: any player called up must be with the squad no less the 48 hours before the England game.

“It is disappointing to lose Cory who was the man of the match against Uruguay,” Gatland said. “Tyler was part of the extended squad, training very well, and he will link up with us in London later today.”
