Crane for huge new tower to transform Liverpool's skyline appears on Leeds Street

The crane for a huge new tower in Liverpool - one of three that could transform part of the city 's skyline - has been put in place.

Residents and passers-by were seen gazing up at the major tower-to-be's crane off Leeds Street on Thursday. The tower is set to be part of the Infinity landmark development - a scheme centred around three huge buildings soaring to 27, 33 and 39 storeys high.

The development is at the junction with Pall Mall, and an onlooker said on Thursday he saw "three people" setting up one of the steel structures.

The project will see homes built with views across the Mersey and to North Wales .

The first tower is currently being built by the Elliot Group , and is set to be 39 floors, holding more than 400 homes.

It's believed work on Infinity will take almost three years to complete, with the three towers holding more than 1,000 people in total.

Last month, images revealed how the inside of the apartment block will look .

Speaking last month, Elliot Lawless, director of the group, said: "[Contractors] Vermont have been beavering away behind the hoardings for weeks now but with the piling rig arriving on site this is the first time that passers-by will be able to see activity for themselves."

On the challenge of building such a tall structure, the chief executive of Liverpool-based Vermont Construction, Mark Connor, said: " We’re building a number of very tall structures so we’re familiar with the challenges posed by such a project.

"It’s an exciting development and we’ve got an international team providing their expertise which is a testament to how far we’ve come in such a short space of time, and we are very proud to be delivering a building that will have such a positive impact on my home city.”

The towers are just a few of a number of new buildings planned that could transform the area around Leeds Street .

The road, which currently has a mix of empty land and businesses, is set to see an explosion in the number of homes there as a number of high rise residential blocks are being proposed.
