Cordons remain as investigation into explosion near Weston-super-Mare continues

Police have insisted there's 'no risk to the public' as the investigation into an 'explosion' near Weston-super-Mare continues.

Two arrested after police and bomb disposal unit called to road near Weston-super-Mare after "loud bangs" were reported in Worle early on Tuesday morning (May 14).

Police were alerted at around 4.30am after members of the public heard two loud bangs in the Appletree Court area.

The EOD unit located a small device in a lane in the Appletree Court area and later confirmed it posed no threat to the public.

A residential property on the road was searched by police on Tuesday (May 14).

A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Constabulary said the incident is "not being treated as terrorism or domestic terrorism related" and that there "no risk to the wider public".

DI Rich Horsfall said: “We’d like to reiterate our thanks to the public for their support through yesterday’s disruption.

“The cordons are now confined to the two properties to allow for police-led searches to take place, so the impact on the wider public should be minimal.

“We’d also like to thank all the agencies who’ve supported our investigation, including the EOD which provided specialist skills and expertise.

“We’re continuing to question two men, aged 20 and 21, and they remain in custody at this time.”
