Cordon near Merseyrail station after police make discovery

Police searched land in north Liverpool after a gun was found near Kirkdale station.

The firearm was found this morning on land near the railway line off Melrose Road near the approach to Kirkdale station.

The gun has now been 'made safe' by police.

There was a police presence in the Kirkdale area today as police carried out searches of land in the area.

Rail services on the busy Northern Line were not disrupted.

A spokesman for the force said: "We can confirm that officers are in Kirkdale carrying out an area search this morning, Wednesday 16 September.

"At around 9.30am, officers were called to an area between Kirkdale and Sandhills stations to a firearm being found.

"The firearm has been made safe and forensically recovered.

"Officers remain in the area to carry out further enquiries.

"Anyone with information on the storage, possession and use of firearms is asked to call 999 if a crime is in progress. You can also pass information via Twitter @MerPolCC or Facebook ‘Merseyside Police Contact Centre."
