Cordon in place after huge sinkhole opens up on Blyth beach

Emergency services have cordoned off part of Blyth beach after a massive sinkhole opened up in the sand.

The Coastguard were called out to the south end of the beach to assist Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service on Monday afternoon.

Northumbria Police were also called to the scene.

On Tuesday, crews remain on scene filling the hole with a tractor and a cordon remains in place.

A spokesperson for the Maritime & Coastguard Agency said: "At 12.50pm yesterday (7 October), HM Coastguard was asked to assist Northumberland Fire and rescue service with a report of a sink hole on Blyth south beach.

"The local authority was informed and Senior Coastguard Operations Officers and the Blyth Coastguard Rescue Team were sent to cordon off the area."
