Cordarrelle Patterson tries to recruit Odell Beckham to Falcons

Cordarrelle Patterson has been an integral part of the Atlanta Falcons’ offense this season, more so than people expected when he signed a one-year, $3 million contract during the offseason. By using Patterson as a runner, pass-catcher, and returner, the team has maximized the 30-year-old’s productivity.

Now, Patterson is calling on the Falcons to do the same with free-agent wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr., who was released by the Cleveland Browns following the NFL’s trade deadline.

While Patterson’s efforts are in good faith, the move will likely fall on deaf ears as the Falcons simply don’t have the appropriate funds to bring in the former star receiver, even at a veteran minimum. While there are always moves a team can make to clear space, they just tend to create a bigger cap burden down the line. These types of moves are what caused the Falcons to be in their current financial conundrum in the first place.

While Odell would greatly improve Atlanta’s receiving core, it doesn’t make sense financially for a team near the bottom of the NFL in cap space. If the Falcons do become interested in Beckham, they are 11th on the waiver wire and many of the teams ahead of them are in better salary cap shape.
