Cora Staunton returns to action five months after gruesome double leg break and helps her club to Mayo championship

Cora Staunton completed a startling recovery from a horrific double leg break she suffered in May to help her club Carnacon to a Mayo championship on Saturday.

The 37-year-old AFLW star made the comeback, scoring with her first touch after coming on during the second-half of the decider.

The win is the club's 20th Mayo crown in a row and their 21st in all - with the club boosted by the veteran's return to training midway through last month.

"Love this club, (It's) been an incredibly difficult 6 months but we stood together through it all. Title no.21 will always be very special with this bunch," Staunton said in a tweet following the triumph.

Staunton had just signed a new deal with Greater Western Sydney Giants for the 2020 season alongside Donegal's Yvonne Bonner before she suffered the breaks in both the tibia and fibula on her right leg as well as a broken ankle in a match for the side.

The former Mayo footballer made the jump across to Australia in recent years and has become a trailblazer as several of the biggest talents in ladies football have also subsequently been scouted and signed to contracts.
