Cops warn Scots businesses over circulation of fake £50 bank notes

Police have urged Scots businesses to be on alert after a string of fake £50 bank notes have been found in circulation.

Members of the public in the Borders have been asked to phone the police immediately if they suspect that one of their banknotes is counterfeit.

It comes after a number of reports of a man trying to pass fake Bank of Scotland £50 notes in Galashiels, Jedburgh and Hawick.

Businesses have been reminded that paper notes can be easily tested using a counterfeit detector pen.

A black stain will be applied to the counterfeit notes, but no stain will appear on the real ones.

Polymer notes cannot be checked with the pen, but a UV light can be used to detect whether or not it is counterfeit.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: “We are urging businesses in Scottish Borders to be alert to fake Bank of Scotland £50 notes following reports of a male attempting to pass these notes in Galashiels, Jedburgh and Hawick.

“If you suspect that counterfeit notes of any type have been tendered please call Police on 101 or 999 in an emergency.”
