Cops warn scammers are targeting vulnerable Scots with fake coronavirus vaccine email

Lanarkshire locals have been urged to be 'vigilant' amid a new coronavirus vaccine scam.

Cruel con artists are pretending to be from the NHS and are sending emails telling people they have been selected for the vaccine- and that there is only 12 hours to reply.

When victims click to accept, a fake link tries to harvest the person's personal financial details.

The latest scam comes amid warnings the NHS Scotland’s Counter Fraud Services has seen a spike in alerts to the fraudulent emails as the vaccination rollout continues across Scotland.

The recent email includes many paragraphs about the safety of vaccines in a bid to make it look genuine.

A warning issued by Lanarkshire police division today read: "Vaccine Scams are still doing the rounds.

"Please be vigilant and speak to your vulnerable/elderly relatives and friends about these.

"DO NOT click on any links provided in an email.

"DO NOT send any payment for a vaccine.

"DO NOT give out any personal details in relation to these emails.

"We've had some saying they can't believe people fall for this. Sadly they do, this is what the scammers count on by sending thousands of these emails to people every day.

"Frauds are possibly under reported due to shame and embarrassment of 'falling for it'."
