Oct. 28--Chicago police are warning residents of the Shakespeare and Town Hall police districts about a man who has been prying open apartment buildings' foyer doors and stealing packages on the North and Northwest sides.
The man most recently stole packages from a building in the 1900 block of West Diversey Parkway, on the border between the Lincoln Park and Lakeview neighborhoods, about 5:50 a.m. Friday, according to an alert issued Wednesday morning by Area North detectives.
Police also released surveillance video of the man stealing packages from the Diversey apartment building. In the video, the man can be seen riding up on a bicycle, prying the glass front door open, then picking up a package and putting it in a bag and walking into the building after checking behind him.
A little more than 30 seconds later, the man walks back out of the building, gets back on the bicycle and rides away.
The man also is believed to have stolen packages from an apartment building in the 1800 block of North Winnebago Avenue about 10:30 p.m. on Oct. 11, according to police.
The thief is described as white or white-Hispanic, between 40 and 50 years old, about 5-foot-10 and about 190 pounds. In the most recent theft, the man was wearing a black or blue New York Yankees cap, with a white-trimmed brim that still had a black-and-gold "59Fifty" sticker on the top brim, a blue sweatshirt or jacket, tan pants and gym shoes. He was wearing a black duffel bag.
Anyone with information about the thief is asked to call Area North detectives at 312-744-8263.
