Jan. 21--Chicago police have alerted residents of the Chicago Lawn area to a handful of recently reported catalytic converter thefts.
A catalytic converter is an emissions control device that contains precious metals. All vehicles produced in the United States since 1975 must have a catalytic converter as part of their exhaust systems, according to insurer Nationwide's website.
Catalytic converter thefts are common and may be linked to demand for metals such as platinum, palladium or rhodium.
Cars missing a catalytic converter will give a signature "gravelly roar" when started, according to Nationwide. The insurer cautions drivers that thefts typically happen to vehicles that are parked for long periods in large lots, or to vehicles that sit higher off the ground, such as trucks and SUVs.
Garfield Ridge resident Steve Kucharski said his Jeep Grand Cherokee's catalytic converter was stolen early Saturday.
"I looked out my basement windows and from that angle I could see underneath the car and I could see the exhaust system hanging," Kucharski said. "I knew immediately what had happened."
He said it cost $180 to have the piece replaced.
