Cops warn Hogmanay parties will be broken up as Scots urged to stay home to stop coronavirus spread

Police have warned they will use their powers to break up Hogmanay parties.

Cops are urging Scots to "do the right thing" this New Year's Eve and stay at home to stop the spread of Covid-19.

Lockdown restrictions mean house parties and street bashes are banned, with bringing in the bells set to be a vastly different prospect from the norm.

Edinburgh's world-famous Hogmanay celebrations have gone online this year, with a stunning drone display.

A special film - based on a poem from Scots Makar, Jackie Kay, and released in three parts - will show over 150 drones taking to the skies across Scotland.

Street bashes in Scotland's other cities have also been cancelled, in line with the Scottish Government's guidance on stopping the spread of the deadly infection.

And Police Scotland has urged revelers to protect themselves and others by sticking to their sofas - and warned there will be consequences for those who flout the regulations.

Deputy Chief Constable Malcolm Graham said: "We're asking everyone to continue to do the right thing to stop the spread of this virus and protect public health as it's clear that there is an ongoing risk.

"Remember that parties and indoor gatherings of different households are not permitted and we will continue to use our enforcement powers to disperse large groups of people where necessary.

"Our approach throughout the pandemic has been to engage with the public, explain the legislation and guidance, and encourage compliance, but we will not hesitate to continue to use our enforcement powers as a last resort.

"Please follow the Scottish Government's advice, which is to celebrate Hogmanay and the New Year with your own household only, in your own home."
