Cops warn drivers after car mats with nails sticking out of them are left on Scots road

Police have warned drivers to be on the lookout after two car mats with nails punched through them were left on a busy Scots road.

Posting on the Highlands and Islands Police Division Facebook page, officers appealed for information about the shocking discovery.

The post stated the two dangerous car mats were deliberately placed on the A99 south of Wick between Hempriggs straight and Thrumster Village on Saturday, January 2, between 7.55pm and 8.15pm.

It read: "Thankfully, no vehicles drove over them but the consequences could have been serious."

A photo showed the altered mats which each had over twenty 5 or 6 inch nails sticking out from them.

Officers asked anyone with information to call 101 quoting reference NJ/6/21 if you know who was responsible or have any helpful information.

Facebook users were shocked and called for the people involved to turn themselves in.

One person wrote: "Hope this person is caught and punished. They want the book thrown at them. This could have had disastrous consequences, an Ambulance, a Police car or a Fire engine racing to an incident."

While another added: "I dread to think what would happen if a motorbike went over those."
