Cops warn adults against buying alcohol for under-18s following man's arrest in Wishaw

Police have issued a warning to Wishaw adults looking to buy booze for kids.

The call comes after officers arrested a man in Wishaw Main Street trying to purchase alcohol for children.

Cops intercepted the adult buying the drink for a child near to the Beer Barrel store at around 7.40pm on January 4.

A 20-year-old man has been reported for the alleged offence and a report has been submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “Police Scotland have an excellent working relationship with all licensed premises in Wishaw and across Lanarkshire, and visit them as a matter of routine.

"If you purchase alcohol for children, it is likely that the premises will report the matter, town centre CCTV will see the transaction, or police will be nearby, as was the case here.

“We have launched the #Youreaskingforit campaign, highlighting the offence and penalties for those caught buying alcohol for children.

"We ask that people consider the risks to children, and the possible criminal record which can arise from this activity.”
