Cops treating Glasgow sports centre fire as deliberate as probe launched

Cops are treating a major fire at a Scots sports centre as deliberate.

Emergency crews were scrambled to the blaze at the Scotstoun Leisure Centre in Glasgow around 6.20pm last night.

Firefighters tackled the inferno on the city's Danes Drive and there were no injuries.

Dramatic pictures from the scene showed thick black pouring into the sky which could be seen for miles across the city.

It is understood that rubbish was set on fire around the building but that surrounding properties were not affected.

Police have now confirmed they are treating the fire as a deliberate act and a probe has been launched.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: "Police were called around 6.20pm on Wednesday, 5 August, 2021 following the report of a fire on Danes Drive, Glasgow.

"The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service attended and extinguished the fire safely. There were no injuries.

"Enquiries are currently ongoing and the fire is being treated as wilful."
