Cops to explore primary school 'parking tickets' in bid to curb dodgy drivers

Cops are could soon be joining forces with primary school pupils in a bid to tackle inconsiderate parking around Renfrew primary schools.

Police in the town have agreed to explore the idea of youngsters issuing their own ‘parking tickets’ which would remind dodgy drivers to park safely around Newmains, St James’ and Kirklandneuk primary schools.

Renfrew North and Braehead councillor Jane Strang spoke to cops about the idea after she had seen it put into action at a school in Monifieth, Angus.

Cllr Strang, who has been vocal on parking problems around schools for some time, says accidents and near-misses are happening on a regular basis around Renfrew schools.

And after spending several days talking to patrollers around Newmains Primary, she claims patrollers are facing aggressive behaviour from drivers.

Council officials have agreed to meet with patrollers on a regular basis to discuss ongoing problems.

The Conservative councillor said: “We must ensure the areas surrounding our primary schools are completely safe for our children, but sadly that is not the case at many schools across Renfrew right now.

“Our patrollers should not have to put up with being abused and I am pleased council officials have agreed to meet with patrollers on a regular basis to discuss the issues affecting them.

“I am committed to liaising with the patrollers as well as local police officers in order to find urgent solutions to this and hope to meet with local area commanders as soon as possible.

“Over in Monifieth, I was impressed to see local youngsters had been working with police officers in order to encourage responsible parking and I am pleased officers at Renfrew police station have committed to exploring this within the schools as I believe our youngsters can help play a part in reducing incidents.

“I would encourage anyone who has experienced problems to continue to raise them with me.”
